Spinal Tap meets… Cheech & Chong?
Well, kinda sorta…
Billed as The World’s First and Only Heavy Metal Mariachi Band, Metalachi serves up a unique impression of being no less than a perfect, south-of-the-border complement to the likes of Beatallica, or Richard Cheese & his Lounge Against The Machine. Hell, even the modern granddaddy of parody, Weird Al Yankovic, whose stomping Top 40 into cut-time polka medleys would most certainly be proud of this band! That Metalachi forges a marriage between the two most unlikely of musical companions (heavy metal and traditional mariachi), one might initially think of it as a musical train wreck before ever hearing them. However, the kicker is that their style is a fiercely original and wildly entertaining culture shock!
Rivethead's Wes Dodson recently spoke with Metalachi vocalist, Vega De La Rockha, via Los Angeles…
WES DODSON: For those who still don’t know, what is Metalachi?
VEGA DE LA ROCKHA: Metalachi is a concept. It’s something you have to experience live because of all the antics and inside jokes we have between us. Musically, it’s a mix of metal music and mariachi… music that’s metal, but performed with mariachi instruments.
WES: Metalachi has previously toured through Texas a half dozen times or so. Are you finding that more and more people are catching on with each tour?
VEGA: I would say it’s very fortunate for us. We’re very lucky that we have the Latino community out there and also, you know, we have a lot of hardcore metalheads out there that enjoy what we’re doing. I guess just the mix of races and stuff kind of helps us out in a way, you know?
WES: This past week, Metalachi shared a Las Vegas stage with a much revered Texas institution, The Reverend Horton Heat. Tell us a little about that show.
VEGA: Man, it was an amazing show! We did a short set, but I would call it a powerful short set. We got a really good response from the Reverend fans that had never seen us. They were very responsive!
WES: Are there currently any plans for a follow up to the 2012 Metalachi debut album, Uno?
VEGA: Oh yeah, we are actually working on that right now. We’re going to incorporate a couple of original songs as well. People that have seen us or have heard us know our sound. I’m pretty sure they’ll enjoy the new stuff we’ll be bringing out [in addition to] the covers that we have.
WES: I’ve read somewhere that [Maximilian] “Dirty” Sanchez sometimes gets arrested and a family member is called in to cover for him. Do you anticipate that he will be out of jail and joining Metalachi for the upcoming shows in Texas, or should we expect Pancho or Nacho (Sanchez) to be filling his shoes?
VEGA: Actually, Itchy Sanchez is the one that covers up for him. He [“Dirty” Sanchez] will be coming with us. He’s got his shit straight now [laughs]. All the bail bonds have been paid!
WES: If someone was to buy a round for the band, what is the one beer that could be called the official Cervesa de Metalachi?
VEGA: Well, usually we get Pabst Blue Ribbon… and if it’s not beer, then we’ll take a shot of Patron or Don Julio!
WES: In closing, share with us a crazy Metalachi tale from the road.
VEGA: Well, I don’t know if I’d call it crazy, but it was really, really fun… we went to Odessa. We had three girls dancing with us onstage… topless. So, they took my shirt off, too. They made a Metalachi sandwich, I would call it. One was behind me, one was in front of me, and they were just dancing there. I could feel their boobies in front of me and everywhere… it was [sings] amazing!
WES: Thanks for taking time out to talk with us! We wish Metalachi all the best out there on the road and look forward to your upcoming Houston visit to Scout Bar on August 8th!
VEGA: Awesome! Wes, thank you so much for the interview. I appreciate you guys and we’ll be seeing you soon!
Folks, you owe it to yourself to get out there and check these guys out! Take a friend…take a bunch of friends! With six upcoming August dates in Texas, there is bound to be a Metalachi show coming soon near you... Ay Chingado!
It would be void of any dignity and grace if special mention of gratitude was not extended to Eric Travis of Yarddart Entertainment L.L.C. for his part in making this interview happen.
